As a genre of books, the sci-fi/fantasy, has gotten a tremendous shot in the arm by the release of several, hugely popular, sci-fi/fantasy movies. One of the authors who is being helped by the increase in popularity is David Eddings, however, his long-time fans had no need of the extra boost. The sci-fi (science fiction) author most often creates a new world in which to set his books, as did David Eddings. In fact, he created two new worlds in which to live his fantasy live. They have, in his words, an improbable geology and an unlikely theology. Unlike many sci-fi books, his main characters is not the all powerful heroes, but the regular guy. His characters are varied and unlikely, which may be one of the reasons for his success.
While there is always criticism of all books, as you now expect, it has not kept his readers from enjoying his books. Most readers now ignore the critics, mostly because they refuse to acknowledge a good book. Everyone has something to criticize about a book nowadays, and readers have increased they distance from critics. The criticisms of David Eddings work is that his stereotypes of the characters races he builds are racist in nature, and that his characterizations are lazy. His readers most definitely disagree. A Little Life History About David Eddings
David Eddings was born in 1931 and married his long-time wife Leigh Schall in 1962. David worked as several jobs and included an stint in the U.S. Army. Some of the jobs were English teacher at the college level, sales clerk and a store clerk, all while writing. He lived in many places but now lives in Nevada. He published his first book in 1973, though it was definitely not the first book he wrote. He has had twenty-two books published. While not all are published in the name of both him self and his wife, he has acknowledged that she helped write all of them. The Far Reaching Sci-Fi/Fantasy Genre
The sci-fi/fantasy genre crossed borders of many types, as the genre appeals to people of all ages, nationalities and genders. This unusually large audience pool provides the sci-fi/fantasy writer many opportunities, but they are not unlimited or exceptionally kind to poor writers. The audience requires that thought and characterization be fairly complex. While they don’t mind suspending reality, they to require that what reality you replace it with, be well thought out and complete. As sci-fi/fantasy books are often about a quest, of some type, the actually underlying quest story is not a turn-off to sci-fi readers. It is what creations cover the quest and make it readable that is judged.
