Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a pastor in Germany during the Nazi regime. He was not only a theologian and spiritual writer but also a revolutionary, a key person in the struggle mounted by the Protestant church against Adolph Hitler. He was instrumental in the formation of the Confessing Church, the only organized resistance to the Nazi rule. Bonhoeffer went to New York on a teaching fellowship. He returned to Germany in 1932 and keenly felt the injustice of the racial prejudice implemented by Hitler. He challenged the traditional Christian churches and defended the Jews during their persecution by the Nazi regime. Bonhoeffer was executed by the Nazis just 3 weeks before the World War II ended, when he was just 39 years old. His books live to tell his name. The Cost of Discipleship by Bonhoeffer – Audio MP3
The Cost of Discipleship by Bonhoeffer is an unabridged version, narrated by Paul Michael in this rare MP3 collection. The book expounds the relationship of human beings with the teachings of Jesus. Bonhoeffer analyzes the Sermon on the Mount in current context and provides answers to several timeless questions in the society. What does it mean to follow the discipleship? How do you adhere to the words of Jesus? What is the implication of the teachings of Jesus to a businessman of today, a soldier, an aristocrat, a laborer? What is the legacy of Jesus to us now? Bonhoeffer provides an interesting explanation by defining ‘cheap grace’ and ‘costly grace’. According to him, ‘cheap grace’ is what we offer ourselves without any kind of discipleship to a belief. In contrast, ‘costly grace’ is the gospel of Jesus that requires continuous seeking. Since the grace of Jesus bestows a man a true life if obtained and costs him his life itself if denied, it is the ‘costly grace’. This must-read audio MP3 of Bonhoeffer defines the demands of sacrifice and corresponding ethical consistency required of men.
